President Paul Kagame has spoken about Rwanda’s efforts to stop the production and sale of substandard alcohol, saying the main goal is to protect the health and lives of Rwandans.
Kagame said the government’s decision to act against unsafe alcoholic drinks should not be judged only by the financial losses faced by companies after their products were stopped.
He questioned whether protecting factories and jobs should come before protecting the people who could lose their lives because of unsafe products.
“Do we want industries and the workers in them to be killed by the products made in those industries?” Kagame asked.
His comments highlight the government’s position that public health must come first when products are considered dangerous.
The President’s remarks come amid continued efforts to address alcohol products that do not meet required safety and quality standards in Rwanda.
