The extraordinary story of Soviet oceanographer Stanislav “Slava” Kurilov, who escaped the Soviet Union by swimming through the open ocean, is heading to the big screen in a new animated feature titled Alone in the Ocean.
Russian filmmaker Kirill Sokolov, known for films including Why Don’t You Just Die! and They Will Kill You, has joined the project as director. The film will mark his first animated feature and is being developed by Lazy Sunday and The Media Company.
The project is based on Kurilov’s autobiographical book Alone in the Ocean, which was published posthumously in 2004. Kurilov, an oceanographer and experienced free diver, died in 1998 following a diving accident.
His remarkable escape took place in December 1974. While aboard a Soviet tourist cruise near the Philippines, Kurilov made the decision to leave the vessel and attempt a dangerous swim to freedom.
With no food or drinking water and equipped only with basic swimming gear, he reportedly spent almost three days in the open sea and covered around 100 kilometres before reaching the Philippine coast.
Kurilov had long wanted to see the world, but restrictions imposed by the Soviet Union prevented him from freely travelling abroad. His decision to jump from the cruise ship ultimately turned his personal desire for freedom into one of the most extraordinary escape stories of the 20th century.
What was initially planned as a live-action film has since evolved into a hybrid production combining several filmmaking techniques. The project is expected to blend live action, motion capture, rotoscoping, 2D and 3D animation, as well as water simulation.
The filmmakers also plan to use different visual styles to separate Kurilov’s physical experience in the ocean from his memories and inner world.
For Sokolov, animation offers an opportunity to portray both the physical danger of Kurilov’s journey and the psychological experience behind it. The director has said that the format allows the character’s external struggle and internal emotions to become part of the same visual language.
Roman Sokolov is serving as the film’s art director. He is a close creative collaborator of animator Konstantin Bronzit, whose work includes the Academy Award-nominated animated shorts We Can’t Live without Cosmos and The Three Sisters.
The film is being produced by Artem Vasilyev, Roman Borisevich and Didier Lupfer, with Alan Keane serving as creative producer. Discussions with potential European production partners are also underway.
With its combination of historical events, survival and animation, Alone in the Ocean is set to bring Kurilov’s extraordinary journey to a new generation of audiences.
