Rwanda international Joy-Lance Mickels made history on Tuesday night by scoring for Sabah FK in their 2–0 victory over Slavia Prague in the UEFA Champions League.
Mickels scored Sabah’s second goal in the 88th minute, helping the Azerbaijani club secure its first victory in the competition’s league phase. The result was a major moment for Sabah and gave Rwandan football fans another reason to follow the team’s European campaign.
Sabah took the lead in the 49th minute through Kaheem Parris before Mickels sealed the win late in the game. The victory came after Sabah’s 4–0 defeat to Manchester United in their opening league-phase match.
Mickels, who represents Rwanda at international level, had already made history by becoming the first Rwandan player to feature in the Champions League league phase. His goal against Slavia Prague added another milestone to his European campaign.
The 2–0 result also gave Sabah their first points of the league phase, while Slavia Prague left Baku without scoring.
Mickels’ performance puts a Rwandan international in the spotlight on one of European club football’s biggest stages. His progress with Sabah will be worth following as the Champions League campaign continues.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Atlético Madrid beat Manchester United 2–0, Club Brugge defeated Inter Milan 4–3, and Viking FK drew 3–3 with Bayern Munich. Barcelona beat Galatasaray 4–1, while Arsenal secured a 3–0 win over Lille.
For Rwanda, however, Sabah’s victory had a special highlight: Joy-Lance Mickels finding the net on the Champions League stage.
