Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving Portugal’s national team camp following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The disciplinary decision was announced on Monday, October 19, 2026, after the federation upheld the charge against the 41-year-old forward. The case follows an incident during Portugal’s recent international break.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s training base in Copenhagen ahead of the team’s Nations League match against Denmark. His departure came after he was left on the bench throughout Portugal’s match against Norway, leading to a disagreement over his role in the team.
Ronaldo claimed that Jesus had broken his word about the playing time they had discussed. The coach, however, denied making an agreement with the Portuguese captain, although he has left the door open for Ronaldo to return to the national team.
The FPF’s disciplinary council found that Ronaldo had intentionally violated Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations. The federation imposed a 30-day suspension and a fine of €255, equivalent to about $286.
However, the federation has not clearly stated which matches or national team activities will be affected by the suspension. It is also unclear whether the time Ronaldo spent under a provisional suspension earlier this month will count toward the final punishment.
Following the incident, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and supporters for leaving the camp. He accepted responsibility for his actions and said he remained available to represent Portugal after serving any punishment.
FPF president Pedro Proença has also expressed the federation’s desire to welcome Ronaldo back once the matter is resolved. The situation leaves attention on the relationship between the Portugal captain and coach Jesus as the team prepares for its upcoming international fixtures.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer, and his future involvement with the national team will be closely watched as the suspension takes effect.
