King Charles III has confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will remain non-working members of the Royal Family after returning to the UK.
The King has authorized a formal letter to senior British officials to make clear that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not return to official royal duties.
The letter, issued through the Lord Chamberlain, was sent to government departments, the military and other senior officials after Harry and Meghan returned to Britain with their children last month.
Harry and Meghan stepped down from working royal duties in 2020 before moving to the United States. Their return to the UK had raised questions about whether they could take on official royal roles again.
The King’s message makes clear that their status has not changed. They will continue to be treated as private citizens with commercial and charitable interests and will not represent the King at official events.
The couple also remain unable to use their His and Her Royal Highness (HRH) titles, which remain in abeyance. Their charity work and business activities will continue privately rather than as official royal duties.
The clarification means Harry and Meghan can live in the UK while maintaining their independent lives, without returning to the working Royal Family.
