Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson appeared at the White House press briefing room on Friday, October 9, 2026, before travelling with President Donald Trump to a midterm campaign rally in Syracuse, New York.

Tyson, 60, briefly spoke with reporters at the White House podium, drawing attention to an unusual appearance by the former boxing champion in the briefing room.

When asked why he was at the White House, Tyson said he had been called by the president to join him on the trip, according to video reports of the encounter.

During the exchange, reporters also asked Tyson about the planned trip and what he might discuss with Trump. Tyson did not provide details of any private conversation.

The visit came as Trump travelled to Syracuse for a campaign rally ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. The event took place at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center at the Oncenter in downtown Syracuse, where Trump was scheduled to address supporters.

Tyson and Trump have known each other for decades. Trump promoted several of Tyson’s boxing events during the heavyweight champion’s rise in the 1980s, creating a connection between the sports figure and the businessman long before Trump entered the White House.

Tyson’s appearance brought together two familiar public figures from boxing and American politics. His visit also drew attention to Trump’s campaign stop in New York as Republicans prepared for the midterm elections.

The Syracuse rally was part of Trump’s wider campaign activity ahead of the November vote, with the president travelling to support Republican candidates.
