Jamaican-American reggae and dancehall star Shaggy celebrates his 58th birthday on October 22, 2026, marking another year in the life of one of the most recognisable voices in international music.

Born Orville Richard Burrell on October 22, 1968, in Kingston, Jamaica, Shaggy built a successful career by bringing Jamaican dancehall and reggae sounds to audiences around the world. He is widely known for hit songs including “Oh Carolina,” “Boombastic,” “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel,” which helped establish him as a global music star.

Shaggy first gained major international attention with “Oh Carolina” in 1993, followed by “Boombastic” in 1995. His career reached another major milestone with the release of his 2000 album Hot Shot, which featured “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel.” Both songs became international hits, with Hot Shot reaching the top of the US Billboard 200 chart.

Throughout his career, Shaggy has earned two Grammy Awards. He won Best Reggae Album for Boombastic in 1996 and shared the award with British musician Sting for their collaborative album 44/876 in 2019. Their musical partnership introduced his distinctive reggae and dancehall style to new audiences.

Beyond music, Shaggy has a remarkable personal story. He served in the United States Marine Corps before his music career reached its biggest heights, including service during the Persian Gulf War. His experiences in the military formed an important part of his journey before he became an internationally recognised performer.

His achievements have also been recognised in Jamaica. In 2007, he received the Order of Distinction with the rank of Commander. In 2022, Brown University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in recognition of his accomplishments.

Shaggy has also used his success to support others. Through his Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation and benefit concerts, he has helped raise money and provide equipment for the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Jamaica.

In 2026, he continued to release new music, including his album Lottery, which arrived in May with collaborations featuring artists such as Sting, Akon, Robin Thicke and Anthony Hamilton. In October, he also brought a fresh sound to “Boom Body” with a Shatta remix by French producer and DJ Shaz, blending dancehall rhythms with electronic club sounds.

As Shaggy celebrates his 58th birthday, his journey reflects decades of musical achievements, international collaborations and contributions to his community. From the success of “Boombastic” and Hot Shot to his recent projects, he continues to carry Jamaican music to audiences across generations.

Happy 58th birthday to Shaggy, a global music star whose songs have become part of the soundtrack for fans around the world.
