Cole Palmer has withdrawn from the England squad because of a muscle injury, just days after playing the full 90 minutes for Chelsea against Brentford.
The 24-year-old Chelsea player had been recalled by England manager Thomas Tuchel after missing the 2026 World Cup squad.
Palmer had made a strong start to the new season for Chelsea, scoring four goals and providing two assists in seven appearances. Tuchel had praised his return to form when announcing the England squad.
Palmer played the full match as Chelsea lost 3-0 to Brentford before withdrawing from international duty with the muscle problem. His absence means he will miss England's upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.
England are scheduled to face Spain at Wembley on September 26, followed by matches against the Czech Republic and Croatia during the extended international period.
Palmer had been given another chance to work with Tuchel after being left out of England's World Cup squad. Tuchel said Palmer had returned to a good level for Chelsea and was again influencing matches.
The latest injury is another setback for Palmer after he had a difficult 2025-26 season with fitness problems. Earlier this month, he spoke about his previous injuries and said he wanted to stay fit and avoid another long period away from the pitch.
Palmer's withdrawal also comes as England deal with other fitness concerns. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are among the other players being monitored ahead of the international matches.
For Palmer, the focus will now be on recovering from the muscle injury and returning to Chelsea action when he is ready.
