American singer Chris Brown has avoided immediate jail time after receiving an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over a 2023 attack at a London nightclub.

The 37-year-old singer was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, 2026, after pleading guilty to affray in July. The case relates to an incident involving music producer Abraham Diaw at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, in February 2023.

Court proceedings heard that Brown struck Diaw on the head with a tequila bottle. CCTV footage shown in court captured the attack, during which Brown hit Diaw several times. The victim suffered injuries to his head and knees and received hospital treatment.

A suspended sentence means Brown does not have to go to prison immediately. However, the eight-month prison term can be activated if he commits another offence during the 12-month suspension period or breaches the relevant court conditions.

Brown’s guilty plea led prosecutors to drop more serious charges, including assault causing actual bodily harm, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon. The sentence was therefore imposed for affray, the offence to which he admitted guilt.

Judge Tony Baumgartner described the repeated use of a bottle against the victim’s head as dangerous. The court also considered factors including Brown’s guilty plea, his career and his recent record when deciding the sentence.

Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who was also involved in the incident, received a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months after pleading guilty to affray.

The case drew attention because of Brown’s international music career and the possibility that he could have faced immediate imprisonment. The court’s decision means he remains free for now, but the suspended sentence remains in place for the next 12 months.
