Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in Jorge Jesus’ first Portugal squad as the 41-year-old captain continues his international career.
New Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has named his first 25-player squad, with Ronaldo included for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.
Ronaldo remains one of the main names in the Portugal team despite his age. He had previously said that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be his last, but his inclusion in the new squad means he will continue to represent Portugal for now.
Jesus was appointed Portugal coach in July after Roberto Martínez left the job following Portugal's World Cup exit against Spain.
The new coach also knows Ronaldo well from their time together at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Jesus managed the club during the 2025-26 season, when Al-Nassr won the Saudi Pro League title. Ronaldo scored twice in the final league match as Al-Nassr secured the championship.
However, Jesus has said Ronaldo will be treated like every other player. His selection will depend on his performances rather than his reputation.
The squad also includes several familiar Portugal stars, including Rúben Dias, Nuno Mendes, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leão and João Félix. Four players have been added as new faces to Jesus' first squad, including goalkeeper Samuel Soares.
Portugal's Upcoming Nations League Matches
Portugal will begin its UEFA Nations League campaign against Wales on September 24 in Lisbon. The team will then face Norway on September 27, Denmark on October 1 and Norway again on October 4.
Portugal enters the competition as the defending Nations League champion after winning the tournament in 2019 and 2025.
For Ronaldo, the new campaign provides another opportunity to add to his long international career. His place in Jesus' first squad confirms that Portugal is still counting on its captain as the team begins a new chapter under its new coach.
