Rwandan President Paul Kagame celebrates his 69th birthday on October 23, 2026. As Rwanda continues to grow its presence in sports, music and international entertainment, this birthday offers an opportunity to recognise the role of leadership, investment and ambition in creating new opportunities for the country’s young generation.

For many young Rwandans, entertainment is more than a way to spend free time. Music, sports, comedy, film and creative work are important parts of their lives, dreams and future ambitions. Rwanda’s growing investment in modern venues and international events has helped create more spaces where talent can meet opportunity and where the country can welcome audiences from across Africa and the world.

One of the biggest developments has been the transformation of Stade Amahoro in Kigali. Officially inaugurated in its renovated form by President Kagame on July 1, 2024, the stadium was expanded to accommodate approximately 45,000 spectators. It is designed to host major football matches, sporting competitions and other large events, giving Rwanda a stronger platform for international gatherings. The project also reflects the importance of providing facilities where athletes can compete and fans can come together.

BK Arena, formerly known as Kigali Arena, has also become an important venue for Rwanda’s entertainment and sports scene. Inaugurated by Kagame in August 2019, the multipurpose arena was built to host basketball competitions, concerts and other major gatherings. It has since welcomed international performers and events that bring music lovers, sports fans and visitors together in Kigali.

President Kagame has also personally attended major entertainment events. In December 2023, he joined the crowd at BK Arena for the Move Afrika concert headlined by American rapper Kendrick Lamar. He welcomed the audience and spoke about the importance of music, energy and optimism while expressing hope that Kigali would continue hosting international events. In February 2025, he and First Lady Jeannette Kagame attended John Legend’s Move Afrika concert at the same venue. These moments placed the President among the people enjoying the music and atmosphere of major live performances.

Such appearances have helped bring attention to Rwanda’s growing entertainment calendar. International concerts can create opportunities for local musicians, DJs, dancers, event organisers, photographers, sound engineers and other professionals who work behind the scenes. They can also give Rwandan artists opportunities to perform alongside international stars and introduce their work to wider audiences.

Rwanda’s ambitions extend beyond concerts. Through investment in sports facilities and partnerships that promote the country internationally, Rwanda has continued to attract major sporting competitions and visitors. The Basketball Africa League has brought leading basketball talent to Kigali, while the renovated Stade Amahoro provides a larger stage for football and other events.

Another major development is Rwanda’s agreement to host a Formula 1 African Grand Prix in the early 2030s. The planned race is expected to take place on a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera. If delivered as planned, it will add another international event to Rwanda’s ambitions and create potential opportunities in tourism, hospitality, business and event production.

For young people, these developments matter because the entertainment industry involves more than the stars standing on stage. It also needs writers, filmmakers, producers, designers, marketers, presenters, content creators and technical teams. As Rwanda builds its capacity to host larger events, an important goal will be to ensure that young Rwandans can develop their skills, find work and participate in the opportunities that follow.

Many young Rwandans take pride in seeing their country host major international events and welcome well-known artists and athletes. For those building careers in music, sports and creative industries, Rwanda’s growing profile can offer inspiration and a reason to aim higher. Continued investment in training, access to opportunities and support for local talent will be important in turning that ambition into lasting success.

As President Kagame celebrates his 69th birthday, this tribute recognises the role that Rwanda’s growing entertainment and sports infrastructure has played in shaping the country’s ambitions. From Stade Amahoro and BK Arena to international concerts and the planned Formula 1 Grand Prix, Rwanda is working to strengthen its place on the global stage.

Happy 69th birthday to President Paul Kagame. May Rwanda continue creating opportunities for its young people, supporting local talent and building an entertainment industry in which Rwandan creativity can shine at home and around the world.
