Harry Kane has won the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English player to receive football’s most prestigious individual award since Michael Owen in 2001. The Bayern Munich striker received the honour at the 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on October 26.

The England captain finished ahead of a strong group of contenders, including Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona star Lamine Yamal. His victory marks a major moment in a career built on consistent goalscoring for both club and country.

Kane’s performances during the 2025–26 season helped strengthen his case for the award. Playing for Bayern Munich, he continued to deliver goals and played an important role in the club’s success. His finishing, movement and ability to perform in important matches made him one of the leading candidates for the prize.

The evening brought further recognition for Kane, who also won the Men’s Striker of the Year award. Taking home both honours made the ceremony particularly memorable for the 33-year-old forward.

The event had already attracted attention earlier in the day after the official Ballon d’Or website mistakenly published separate articles naming Kane, Mbappé and Yamal as winners. The articles were removed, and organisers explained that profiles prepared for nominees had been published accidentally. The posts were not confirmation of the final results.

Kane’s win was officially announced later during the ceremony, bringing the uncertainty to an end. In his acceptance speech, he thanked the people who had supported his career, including his teammates, coaches, family and the clubs he has represented.

For English football, Kane’s achievement ends a 25-year wait for another men’s Ballon d’Or winner from the country. For the striker himself, it adds one of the sport’s biggest individual honours to a career that has established him among the leading forwards of his generation.
