Jay-Z’s new HBO(Home Box Office) documentary series, “JAŸ-Z IN 8,” is set to premiere on Friday, September 18, giving viewers a closer look at his music, lyrics, life and creative process.
The eight-part series features Jay-Z in long conversations with legendary producer Rick Rubin, who also directed the project. The two revisit songs from across Jay-Z’s career and discuss the stories and experiences behind his music.
The series comes 30 years after Jay-Z released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, in 1996. During the episodes, he breaks down his writing process and explains how his childhood and life experiences influenced his lyrics.
Some of the songs featured in the series include “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “4:44,” “99 Problems,” “The Story of O.J.,” “Family Feud” and “Legacy.”
Rick Rubin’s role is also important to the project. “JAŸ-Z IN 8” marks his documentary directorial debut. He previously worked with Jay-Z as the producer of “99 Problems” and also directed the music documentary series McCartney 3,2,1.
The first two episodes will air back-to-back on HBO on September 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. They will also be available to stream on HBO Max. Two new episodes will follow each Friday, with the final two episodes arriving on October 9.
“JAŸ-Z IN 8” is directed by Rick Rubin and executive produced by Jay-Z, Rick Rubin and Daniel Kaluuya, among others.
