Manchester United manager Michael Carrick took responsibility after his team suffered a 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, September 16.

United made a strong start at Old Trafford, scoring twice inside the opening 10 minutes. Shea Lacey opened the scoring before Mason Mount made it 2-0.

Brighton then fought back. Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one goal back before half-time, while Pascal Groß equalised in the second half.

Maxim De Cuyper completed Brighton's comeback in the 69th minute, giving the visitors a 3-2 win and sending United out of the Carabao Cup.

After the final whistle, some Manchester United supporters booed the team. Carrick said he understood their reaction and accepted the criticism.

“It’s on me ultimately: as a team what we look like, how we play and what results you get. I take that.”

Carrick also said the team could not accept the way the match ended.

“We can’t accept that as a group. I take responsibility for it. The performance towards the end of the second half, that’s on me.”

The manager said United now need to focus on improving and returning to winning football.

“We’ll all be better. We have to be better,” Carrick said after the defeat. He also pointed to Sunday's Premier League match against Fulham as the team's next chance to respond.

The result means Manchester United are out of the Carabao Cup after their first match in the competition. Brighton move on to the next round after completing the comeback at Old Trafford.

For Carrick, the focus now turns to the Premier League and finding a quick response after another difficult night for Manchester United.
